CREATING THE FUTURE
- INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN EDUCATION, September 3rd and 4th 2009 in Helsinki
Welcome to CREATING THE FUTURE conference that provides new ideas, means and methods to explore architecture and design with children in school and after school activities. The conference is useful for architects and designers, art teachers, educators, youth workers and day care personnel as well as officials and decision-makers involved with participation and interactive planning.
The lectures and viewpoints of the two-day conference open up viewpoints to creativity and experiencing the environment as well as to pedagogical approaches and successful projects. How to approach architecture with children and youth? What do senses tell about the environment? What is creativity? How do architects and designers find the best ideas? How do children learn through play? Can children lead design processes? In both days the participants have also a possibility to participate in pedagogical workshops and discover new ideas and methods hands-on. The workshops can be chosen from a broad variety of themes. The Conference is organized by Arkki, School of Architecture for Children and Youth in collaboration with Architecture and design education group Ampiainen. The conference is supported by the Ministry of Education and the National Council for Architecture.
The goal of Creating the Future Conference is to develop the pedagogical skills of architects working with architecture education. Arkki, School of Architecture for Children and Youth is a pioneer in children's architectural education in Finland since 1993.
In Finland Extracurricular art education for children and young people is provided by music, art, dance, arts and crafts and other institutes. Arkki provides basic education in architecture in weekly groups to 400 children.
Basic education in the arts is goal-oriented, progressing from one level to other. It teaches children skills in self-expression and capabilities needed for vocational, polytechnic and university education in their chosen art form. Participation is voluntary and the education providers may charge moderate fees. The objectives and core contents are determined in national core syllabi devised by the National Board of Education for nine different art forms, which are music, literary arts, dance, performing arts (circus and theatre) and visual arts (architecture, audiovisual art, pictorial art, and arts and crafts).
